This is the fourth episode in a 12 part series of tutorial videos dedicated to Trance Music Production. This series will cover every aspect of music production (apart from Mastering) and will continually develop your skills when applied correctly. Episode 1 (Starting Template) is available here, Episode 2 (Structure) here and Episode 3 (Groove) here.
Episode 4 starts off where the previous episode ended. We have our basic “starting template” done, as well as an overall structure and arrangement sections in place, and we’ve created a groove with various percussive and drum elements. We now want to add atmosphere and ambience to our track, which is a critical aspect of trance music production. What should we use, when should the atmospheres play and how should they be placed in the mix ? How do we add depth and give a space to each sound ? In this episode, Adam Ellis starts with a basic template (kick, bass, crashes) and goes on to develop a multi-layered atmospheric section that makes the track instantly sound more professional and polished. You’ll also find out how the work done in Episodes 1 and 2 (essentially preparing all the channels and busses) will prove extremely useful for building the actual atmospheric layers.

This was Adam’s first number 1 track on Beatport and was one of the highlights in the finale of the ASOT 600 celebrations at the Who’s Afraid Of 138?! Stage. Even today, many diehard Trance fans consider this single to be one of, (if not the best), Uplifting productions of 2013.
What followed after his success with his 2013 single debut was his Subculture premiere entitled ‘Mandarine’, which also topped the Beatport Trance Top 100 charts and was supported by Manuel Le Saux, Richard Durand, Indecent Noise and many more. Adam then went on to produce two more Top 10 singles in 2014 including his astonishing follow up from ‘Napalm Poet’ of ‘Agent Orange’, and has had nearly every single of his career played on ASOT. As far as collaborations go, Adam has worked with 2 of the leading names in the Trance scene today with Bryan Kearney & Menno De Jong and their combined might has brought about the classic remix of Conductor & The Cowboy’s ‘Feeling This Way’ and the wondrous collaborative single, ‘Solicitude’, (respectively).
He is also well known for his stellar remixes of John O Callaghan’s ‘Big Sky’, Menno De Jong’s ‘Creatures Of The Night’, and these reworks strive to further showcase his signature, Uplifting sound. I”ve always had trouble mixing my atmos and not knowing what to even do as far as atmos was concerned. This broke all that down for me and my tracks now sound better for it.

This feels a little like an infomercial for Omnisphere and Exhale.
Great products, for sure, but with some imagination and work you can create some great atmospheres from freeware and stuff just lying around your house.
Setup a multitrack project in your DAW just for atmospheres and layer in different pads and arps and weird ass sounds. Capture reverb tails and reverse them. timestetch stuff. Find patches on your synths you would never normally use and bury them in effects. Grab a microphone and record sounds from the real world like the sound of your furnace going. (Pitch it down and put some reverb on it for an eerie drone.) cut it up. mix it down. manipulate it further. and import them into your project. (Maybe I should produce a video on making atmospheres!)
Again, I love Adam’s productions but this series feels more like unedited reality tv.
I don’t mind youtube videos with spotty production and interuptions but when I’m purchasing a “professional”, “commercial” tutorial I don’t want to spend 10 minutes watching Adam sorting out a technical issue with his controller and midi. This video could have been edited down to about 30 minutes and possibly included with the FX “chapter”.

It sounds like you know how to do Atmos fairly well. This is just my way of doing it mate.
Sorry man, but I am me, and I don’t want to offer tutorials that everyone else is doing. This is me making music MY way and as a professional musician I hoped it gave you a REAL insight into what a producer really does. Sorry if that doesn’t work for you.

Yeah, that’s true, it’s not your issue as a producer. Those products are amazing and you should use the hell out of them if you have them.
But from a cost/benefit perspective of someone dropping money on a trance production tutorial, I had a higher expectation than watching someone pull up a preset on omnisphere and tweak it. Sorry, just my opinion. The legendary Activa also has some mad skills when it comes to atmosphere and sound design and creates his own presets.
Alternatively, after demonstrating using something in Omnisphere, demonstrating how you can achieve a sick atmosphere using just the logic sampler and a few effects…..now that has some interesting value for those of us who can’t readily drop the equivalent of a month’s rent or more on omnisphere, kontakt and exhale.
All that aside, congratulations on your new single “What makes your heart beat” amazing. Cheers!
