This is the third episode in a 12 part series of tutorial videos dedicated to Trance Music Production. This series will cover every aspect of music production (apart from Mastering) and will continually develop your skills when applied correctly. Episode 1 (Starting Template) is available here, and Episode 2 (Structure) here.
Episode 3 starts off where the previous episode ended. We have our basic “starting template” done, as well as an overall structure and arrangement sections in place, and we now want to create our groove consisting of kick, drums, percussions, etc. What should we use ? Where should different elements go ? How to make it sound clean, energetic and professional at the same time ? In this episode, you’ll also find out how the work done in Episodes 1 and 2 (essentially preparing all the channels and busses) will prove extremely useful for building the actual groove.
Who is this tutorial for ?
This tutorial is for artists who want to work faster and improve their sound at the same time. It’s aimed at Logic Pro X users, but the tricks you will learn can also be applied in other DAWs.

Yes, you can still learn the concepts and techniques that Adam uses in his productions, and apply them in your own DAW.
About Adam Ellis
Powerful, euphoric melodies and relentless energy are only some of the illuminative qualities that Adam Ellis contains within his own special blend of euphoric Trance, and his rising reputation has become synonymous with the elite, international Trance fraternity within the last two years. Born and bred in Sheffield, England, (where the first, legendary Superclub, Gatecrasher One, was born), his humble upbringing has culminated into the quintessential underdog story where hard work and driven ambitions has ultimately brought about huge successes within his short career.
Harboring a fierce passion for music, Adam dedicated many years to music production before making his first major impact with a fantastic remix to the seminal Planet Perfecto classic, ‘Bullet In The Gun’. Adam graciously reworked the iconic hit into a modern, peak time floorfiller, and reaped huge support by the main man himself, Paul Oakenfold. Additionally, this breakthrough remix was personally selected as an exclusive addition to ‘Perfecto Records Collected – Volume Three’ mix compilation.
In the way of original productions, Adam delivered a fierce opening act with his debut single of ‘Napalm Poet’ on Kearnage Recordings in the Summer of 2013, and it quickly became a feature track in the sets of many leading artists including John O Callaghan, Bryan Kearney, Aly & Fila, Simon Patterson & Armin van Buuren, (to name a few). This was Adam’s first number 1 track on Beatport and was one of the highlights in the finale of the ASOT 600 celebrations at the Who’s Afraid Of 138?! Stage. Even today, many diehard Trance fans consider this single to be one of, (if not the best), Uplifting productions of 2013.
What followed after his success with his 2013 single debut was his Subculture premiere entitled ‘Mandarine’, which also topped the Beatport Trance Top 100 charts and was supported by Manuel Le Saux, Richard Durand, Indecent Noise and many more. Adam then went on to produce two more Top 10 singles in 2014 including his astonishing follow up from ‘Napalm Poet’ of ‘Agent Orange’, and has had nearly every single of his career played on ASOT. As far as collaborations go, Adam has worked with 2 of the leading names in the Trance scene today with Bryan Kearney & Menno De Jong and their combined might has brought about the classic remix of Conductor & The Cowboy’s ‘Feeling This Way’ and the wondrous collaborative single, ‘Solicitude’, (respectively).
He is also well known for his stellar remixes of John O Callaghan’s ‘Big Sky’, Menno De Jong’s ‘Creatures Of The Night’, and these reworks strive to further showcase his signature, Uplifting sound. Lately, his remixes to Mark Sherry’s A Star With A Star and Jordan Suckley’s Contaminated have been fantastic additions to his growing discography, and his reworks of Liam Wilson’s Kiss and Lange & Susana’s Risk Worth Taking were featured on Solarstone’s Pure Trance Vol. 3 and Lange’s We Are Happy People remixes album.
As a DJ, Adam intense vigor for the vintage sounds of Uplifting and Tech Trance has culminated into a stunning array of music that extends from iconic classics from artists such as Giuseppe Ottaviani and Aly & Fila to the latest in cutting edge Trance sounds. Fueled with fire and power, his relentless display of mighty melodies and spellbinding breakdowns have brought about amazing reception for his fans, and has allotted him certain opportunities to play at some of the world’s biggest clubs, including his recent debut at Cream, Amnesia in Ibiza, which is considered one of the biggest arenas for Trance in the world.
As one of the rare breed of producers who writes 100% of their own material without the help of engineers or ghost writers, Adam has many more projects in the works to be released on Kearnage Recordings, AVA, Damaged, Outburst, Pure Trance, Blackhole Recordings and much more. With the future looking exceptionally bright for this young underdog, the start of 2015 is only going to add fuel to the growing movement behind his music and unite them within his revitalised golden age of Trance.

Adam is a great producer…but as a screencaster…not so much. Don’t get me wrong, this product has value, but my expectations were a bit higher. I actually have more questions after watching this video. It felt rushed. For instance when it comes to developing a “groove” is it always as random or is there some predetermined ideas that go into developing a groove. Do you always start with the percussion? is there consideration for the interplay between the percussion and other elements?
Is everything always on the grid or do you employ some swing elements. I guess I was more interested in the artistic side more than the technical side. There are plenty of free tutorials on how to high pass frequencies so they don’t clash with the bass.
Not much detail went into the amount or style of sidechaining you use on the percussion/clap. Also, I think a 30 second preview of these videos would be helpful in determining my decision to purchase.

Hi mate. I appreciate your reply, however, I am not teaching ‘IN what steps to make Trance’, I am teaching how to do a percussion groove, and I think this video has been made well.
‘I actually have more questions after watching this video. It felt rushed. ‘
I left my email at the end and said ‘ IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ‘ email me…. Send me an email bud

I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into developing tutorials, as I do that in my professional life as well. But if you look at the perspective of a consumer, this is a series of 12 videos at about £30.00 each, £360 for the entire series is a significant investment.
We want to be “wow’d and amazed” for the entire duration of the video and walk away ready to drop another £25.00 – £30.00 on the next one. Perhaps that’s not entirely fair or realistic but it’s still an expectation when you’re hitting the payment button.
That’s equivalent to a 7 month subscription with Sonic Academy who have produced some pretty high quality courses (The James Dymond, Activa and Bjorn Akesson tutorials are pretty awesome.)
In video #2 @ 18:55 after establishing the structure you said “the first thing I would do is build a percussion groove…I would build up 12-15 elements of percussion”.
Coming from a musical performance background with some formal training, it seems more natural to base the rhythmic core around the musical phrasing of the leads. (and even adjust the tuning of the percussion) Perhaps you use this as a starting point and adjust the percussion later after you develop the leads or main musical elements…but this isn’t mentioned and we don’t really know what that looks like until the video on “leads” comes out. Everything in music is intercorrelated so it’s difficult to treat these videos as independent topics and really… maybe they shouldn’t be?
I guess my main point is to just consider that even though you’ve been sweating this stuff out for 9 years, your intended audience for these courses have not. Give the post production of your tutorials the same level detail and consideration you do your amazing tracks. Thanks for listening.

Once again.Another amazing tutorial by Adam. Loving the tricks used when constructing the grooves. e.g Duplicating the folder track so you can see where all the hits are. The information shared about panning and to keep track of your settings, so you utilise the stereo field to the max. What effects to use to enhance the the hits. A lot going on in this tutorial.Exceptionally informative, Can’t wait for the next instalment.

This is great stuff! I’ve looked around the internet for a few years and haven’t found many solid tutorials on uplifting trance production. There are some producers that have done great tutorials (some I can think of are 7Skies, Mike Koglin, Driftmoon, Temple One, and Chris Agnelli) but they seldom go into this much depth (this is only 1 segment of 12!). Sometimes the other artists just do “quick tips”, “this is how I made my specific melody/bassline/etc”, or “this is how I made this track”. Those other tutorials are helpful only to a limited extent. At least for me…because I was never trying to make their exactly melody, their exact percussion sounds, or their exact effects from one of their tracks. Also, sometimes they don’t mention where certain samples and loops came from, step by step how they made a groove, and how they did the sound design on a pluck or whatever. There are a couple other trance tutorials out there like from dancemusicproduction.com that are great…but the productions they create are not at this quality.
This feels like a real production class for uplifting trance. And its only $25! great!
Looking forward to the next 9

In my opinion, Adam Ellis did a great job with these tutorials, but I my opinion he used a lot of libraries and in all the videos he edit the sounds instead create them. I miss how Adam uses some VST, like Sylenth, and how he creates new sounds using them.
I always write the same, but I miss subtitles in another languages.

Adam Ellis is great with tutorials. He have a clear and calm voice and it’s easy to understand what he is explaining. I Think his tutorials are inspiering and I think it’s well Worth the Money. The groove in trance Music is very important and he cover pretty much Everything you need to know about that. I would very much recommend this video to any trance producer!

Was a little disappointed with the Grove tutorial only because i was hoping that the Project file would be included which it wasn’t. I find it easier to watch through the video fully first then visit the included project file (like the others in the series) to better understand what has taken place.
Thats the only real criticism i have. The quality of the teaching is excellent and i love all the extra tips Adam provides while going through how he puts a grove together.
Great work!

Another great tutorial by Adam. The only thing which is missing is the project file. This helps you any further to understand the structure. But anyway the video helps you a lot to build an amazing groove for your own tracks. Again you can use other samples to recreate what he is doing. Can’t find any other tutorials where someone explains stuff like that.

Again a great tutorial! Just like the other “Adam Ellis Trance Production Tutorials” they are very useful and very well explained. Adam gives/shows again a lot of tips, tricks and techniques and all is easy for understanding. Well done Adam Ellis & My Loops!!

This video has helped me a lot when it comes to developing grooves. Other tutorials tend to have the final result already worked out before the video starts, where as Adam starts with nothing and slowly builds up the elements without knowing what he’s going to end up with. I do however think the tutorials are a bit overpriced for what they are and would only buy future episodes if they are on sale.

I watch one over and over.
And We get much benefit from this video.
I recommended this product to my friends.

Never was able to get my groove down pat so I was extra excited to see Adam Ellis do a tutorial called Adam Ellis Trance Production Tutorials #3 – Groove. The techniques he shows here are awesome, I will be drawing inspiration from his techniques and using them in my own productions. Groove is very difficult for me to achieve as I don’t play any instruments especially keyobard so this is very helpful

I’m new a making Trance. I started using his tutorials and just the like the others it is beyond a just watch one and always go back to it. I will get all of them but this one takes you past the usual yada, yada, just make beats. I usually have trouble following any tutorials done in Logic since I use something like FL Studio but so far these are easy to follow. I plan to own all of them.
