Two instruments, one rhythmic body — that’s the entire brief for a psytrance low end. Get it wrong and your kick and bass argue for the whole track; get it right and 140 BPM drives itself while you sit back and add leads on top.
Most tutorials wave at “sidechain the bass” and move on. The actual work lives in five places: kick selection, bass envelope, the crossover between them, the timing offset, and tuning. Miss any one and no amount of compression will save it.
TL;DR
- Choose the kick first. Design the bass around the gap the kick leaves — never the other way around.
- Hard-split the low end: kick owns roughly 30–90 Hz, bass owns roughly 90–250 Hz. Enforce it with EQ.
- Shape volume with an envelope or gated ducker — not a slow sidechain compressor. Psytrance breathes on the tenths of a second, not on 200 ms release curves.
- Nudge the bass a few milliseconds late so the kick’s tail clears before the bass attacks. Adjust by ear.
- Tune the bass to the kick’s actual pitch, and check mono and polarity before you print anything.
Know exactly what your kick is doing below 200 Hz
Before you touch the bass, load the kick on its own channel, drop SPAN or Pro-Q 3 in analyser mode on it, and study it in isolation. In psytrance the kick isn’t just a transient — it’s a short tonal note that defines the root of the track. Producers typically tune to F, F#, or G, but the only pitch that matters is the one your kick is actually ringing at.
Freeze a single hit and look at three things: where the fundamental sits (usually 50–70 Hz), how long the body rings before it decays into silence (usually 80–150 ms for a modern full-on kick, shorter for forest), and where the click lives (typically 2–5 kHz). That decay length is the number you’ll come back to when you time the bass — the bass note can’t fully punch through until the kick’s tail has cleared the crossover zone.
Note the pitch as well. A tuner plugin (MTuner, Melodyne, even Ableton’s Tuner) fed a soloed kick will give you a reading — often not a clean semitone. Write it down. Everything else tunes to this.
Design the bass to leave a hole where the kick lives
The classic psytrance bass is one or two saw or square oscillators, an octave stack, and a low-pass filter around 400–700 Hz to keep it dark. In Serum, saws in Osc A and B with B pitched up an octave, an LPF12 or LPF24 with cutoff around 500 Hz and light resonance, will get you 90% of the way there. Triangle waves work for softer forest-leaning basses; saws for aggressive full-on.
Timbre is only half the patch. The amp envelope is the other half, and it’s what makes a psytrance bass sound like a psytrance bass: attack at zero, decay around 60–90 ms, sustain at zero, release 20–40 ms. Every note is a self-terminating stab. Done right, the patch ducks itself around the kick before you’ve added a single sidechain plugin.
Now put an EQ on the channel and high-pass at 90 Hz with a 24 dB/oct slope. Yes, you’re deliberately gutting the sub from the bass. That range belongs to the kick. Your bass is providing the low-mid body and the rhythmic pulse — not the weight. The moment you accept this, your mixes get louder and cleaner.
Enforce the split at 90 Hz
This is the single non-negotiable rule of psytrance low-end mixing. Kick owns everything below ~90 Hz. Bass owns 90 Hz up to ~250 Hz. Above 250 Hz they can share, carefully.

The 150 Hz dip on the kick is optional. If the kick has a strong shoulder around there that competes with the bass body, a narrow bell (Q around 2–3) at -3 to -6 dB opens up space. If it doesn’t, don’t cut for the sake of cutting.
Time the bass a few milliseconds late
Psytrance runs kick on every quarter and bass on the offbeat eighth — the classic bouncing pulse. But if your bass sits exactly on the grid, it slams into the tail of the previous kick and smears the low end. The fix is to nudge the bass slightly late, so the kick’s decay has cleared the room before the bass attacks.
At 145 BPM, an eighth note is about 207 ms. If the kick body decays over 120 ms, there’s already headroom — but a bass hitting on the grid can still overlap with the tail of the transient’s HP-shelf smear. Try 5–15 ms of positive delay on the bass channel and A/B. When it’s right, the kick will visibly stand up in the mix.
Do this on the channel, not on the MIDI. Ableton’s track delay, FL Studio’s channel offset, Logic’s region delay, Bitwig’s clip offset — all fine. You want one control that shifts every bass note globally so you can tune the pocket without editing clips.
Duck with a shape, not a compressor
Forget the slow-attack, syrupy house pump. Psytrance wants a fast, gated duck that opens the moment the kick transient is done doing its job. Two ways:
Volume shaper. Cableguys VolumeShaper, Kickstart, or LFOTool. Draw a curve that drops to silence on the beat, holds down for 30–50 ms, then ramps back to unity over the next 60–80 ms. Tempo-locked, sample-consistent, immune to kick velocity. This is what most pros actually use.
Kick-triggered compressor. Attack 0.1 ms, ratio 8:1 or higher, threshold set for 8–12 dB of gain reduction, release around 80–100 ms. Faster than house sidechain because the groove is denser. Works, but the shape depends on the incoming kick level, so a louder kick means deeper duck — sometimes that’s what you want, sometimes it isn’t.
Apply the duck to bass, sub layer, pads, drones, atmospheres — anything with meaningful energy below 500 Hz. The whole low-mid range should breathe with the kick as one system.

Tune the bass to the kick, in cents
If the kick’s body rings at 63 Hz, that’s a hair flat of C2. If your bass is playing an equal-tempered C, its fundamental sits at 65.4 Hz — a 40-cent gap. Two low-frequency tones that close together don’t blend; they beat. You’ll hear a slow warble at roughly 2.4 Hz under every downbeat that no compressor will fix.
The kick is sacred — you built the track around it — so the bass tunes to the kick. In Serum, use the master coarse/fine tune at the top of the interface. In Sylenth1, the master tune. Feed a sustained kick sample and a bass note into a tuner, or just solo the two together and adjust bass tuning until the beating slows to under one cycle per second.
On tracks that modulate or play multiple bass notes, tune so the root of the drop lines up perfectly. Non-root notes will have some inharmonicity against the kick, and that’s fine — that’s music. The root carries the weight, so it has to be locked.
Only add a sub layer if the kick doesn’t already have one
The instinct to layer a sine sub under the bass is almost always wrong in psytrance. The kick is already providing the sub. Two sources fighting in the 40–70 Hz range guarantees phase problems and mud, and no amount of EQ carving will completely fix it.
If the low end feels thin, check the kick first. Solo it, look at the analyser: is there real energy at 50–65 Hz? Most commercial psytrance kicks are designed to carry the sub weight on their own. If yours isn’t, layer a short sine tail under the kick itself — not under the bass — triggered from the kick’s MIDI and tuned to its fundamental. That gives you a controlled, phase-aligned sub that you can automate in intros and breakdowns.
Phase and polarity: the check most producers skip
Even with a clean EQ split and tight timing, the kick’s decay tail and the bass’s attack can partially cancel in the 80–120 Hz crossover if they’re out of phase. Zoom into the master waveform on a moment where they overlap. If the combined waveform gets smaller at the overlap instead of bigger, you have cancellation.
Three fixes, in order of preference:
- Nudge the bass a few ms earlier or later and watch the sum. When the waveform grows through the overlap, you’re aligned.
- Flip the polarity of the bass channel. If it suddenly sounds fatter, leave it flipped. This costs nothing to try.
- Swap your kick EQ to linear phase if a steep cut around the crossover is smearing the phase response.
Then hit mono. Every DAW has a utility for it — Ableton’s Utility, Logic’s Gain plugin, or a dedicated tool like bx_solo. If the low end thins or vanishes in mono, you have a phase problem, not a level problem. Clubs sum the low end to mono on the subs, so this isn’t optional.
Sustains, rolls and 16th-note fills
The offbeat eighth is only the skeleton. Real basslines have triplet fills, 16th runs, held notes at bar ends, silence for tension. Each of these breaks the duck cycle in a different way.
On a sustained bass note holding through multiple kicks, a volume shaper carves it every beat — fine on short stabs, ugly on a two-bar hold. Either automate the duck depth down during sustains, or route sustains to a parallel bass channel with a slower recovery curve (say, 150 ms).
16th-note rolls are the opposite problem. At 145 BPM, a 16th is about 103 ms. If your duck recovery is 80 ms, the bass barely recovers between notes and starts sounding gated and choked. Shorten the recovery to around 50–60 ms in busy sections, or reduce the duck depth so the bass has more baseline volume to work from.
Saturation for glue
A touch of saturation on the bass, or on a bus containing both kick and bass, adds shared harmonic content that makes them feel like one instrument. Not a sidechained pair — one instrument.
A signal chain that works on bass:
- EQ: high-pass at 90 Hz, gentle tone shaping.
- Saturation: Decapitator on “A” or “E” with drive around 3, or Saturn 2 on a tape or tube model with drive around 20%. The harmonics land in the 300 Hz–3 kHz range and help the bass cut through on laptop speakers and phones.
- Volume shaper for the duck.
- Optional glue compressor: 2:1, attack around 20 ms, release 80 ms, 1–2 dB reduction.
Do not heavily saturate the kick’s sub region. Adding harmonics to a 60 Hz fundamental multiplies low-frequency energy and eats headroom fast. If you saturate the kick at all, either high-pass the saturator’s input around 150–200 Hz or use a multiband tool so the sub stays clean.

Reference at matched loudness
None of the above matters if you’re mixing louder than your reference — which you will be, because your track is on the master fader and the reference isn’t. Pull a track whose low end you rate — Vertical Mode, Ace Ventura, Astrix, Symbolic, whoever fits your subgenre — into the session. Route it around your master bus and level-match with Youlean Loudness Meter or a simple gain trim. Compare only at matched LUFS.
Three things to listen for:
- The gap of silence between each kick and the following bass note. It’s usually longer than you think — that gap is what makes the low end feel like it’s bouncing.
- How the balance holds up on laptop speakers and phones. If the bass disappears there while your kick still translates, your bass is too low in the 200–500 Hz range.
- Where the weight sits — is it in the kick’s sub, the bass’s body, or shared? Different subgenres answer this differently, so pick a reference that matches what you’re actually trying to make.
Then A/B in a spectrum analyser with overlay mode. If the reference has a scoop at 150 Hz on the kick and yours has a bump there, you’ve just found your muddiness.
The bottom line
A locked psytrance low end isn’t luck. It’s a sequence of small correct decisions: pick the kick first, build the bass around its gaps, split hard at 90 Hz, nudge the bass a few milliseconds late, duck with a shape rather than a slow compressor, tune to the kick’s actual pitch, and verify in mono and with polarity flipped before you print.
Skip the tuning and you get warble. Skip the timing offset and the kick sounds weak even when it’s loud. Skip the mono check and the track dies on a club rig. These steps are a system — and when the system is right, the low end drives the track without you thinking about it, and everything you put on top has room to breathe on a foundation that’s already doing most of the work.
