The rolling bass is the engine of psytrance. Get it right and the track drives itself for eight minutes; get it wrong and no lead, riser or FX will rescue the groove. The mistake almost everyone makes is treating this as a sound design problem. It isn’t. It’s a timing problem between two elements — the kick’s sub tail and the first bass note — that happen to share the same 40 Hz of frequency space.
TL;DR
- Kick on every quarter, bass on the three 16ths between. Same pitch, same length, same velocity — for now.
- Amp envelope: 1–3 ms attack, short decay, zero sustain. The note must die before the next one triggers.
- Split the bass into a mono sine sub and a filtered saw/square top layer. Only saturate the top.
- Make sure the kick’s sub tail has fully decayed before the first bass note starts, or you’ll get phase mud.
- Sidechain lightly — 2–4 dB of duck, fully recovered before the next 16th. This isn’t progressive house.
- High-pass around 30 Hz and notch the bass at the kick’s fundamental so they stop fighting.
What “rolling” actually means
Rolling means the bass sits on the three offbeat 16ths of every quarter: KICK — bass — bass — bass — KICK — bass — bass — bass. At 145 BPM one 16th is about 103 ms, so you’re firing a new bass note every ~103 ms and each one has to be over before the next arrives, or the low end smears into a drone.
The illusion of “rolling” comes from two things: notes that are perfectly identical in shape and volume, and a clean gap between the kick’s sub tail and the first bass note. Lock those and the pattern breathes. Miss either and you get a bassline that steps on the kick or leaves an awkward hole after it.
Before you touch a synth, tap the pattern on the desk. Finger on “one” is the kick. Three taps between are the bass. That’s the whole game.
Program the pattern first
Grid to 1/16. Kick on positions 1, 5, 9, 13 of a 16-step bar. Bass on 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 — twelve notes, three per beat. Same MIDI pitch (F1, F#1, G1 or A1 depending on your track’s key), same velocity, same note length. Movement gets added last, once the pattern rolls on its own.
The sub layer
The sub is 80% of what a big system reproduces, so build it first and finish it before you add anything on top. One oscillator, sine wave, tuned so the root lands around F1–A1 (roughly 43–55 Hz). Below that you lose energy on small speakers; above it, the note stops feeling like a sub.
The envelope is where most producers blow it. You want:
- Attack: 1–3 ms. Not zero — a hard click at the start reads as a transient and fights the kick.
- Hold: 0.
- Decay: short enough that the note is silent before the next 16th. Start around 60–80 ms at 145 BPM and tune by ear.
- Sustain: 0. Non-negotiable. If sustain is above zero the note doesn’t fully release and the pattern turns into a drone.
- Release: 20–40 ms.
The whole note — attack through release — needs to complete inside a 16th. At 145 BPM that means fully silent by ~90 ms after trigger. Even 10 ms of silence between notes is what gives the pattern its rolling feel instead of a legato slur.
The top layer
The sub carries the weight. The top layer is what lets you hear the bassline on laptop speakers and gives it the “brrrp” character that reads as psytrance rather than techno or DnB.
Second oscillator, saw or square. Keep it mono or barely-detuned — one or two unison voices with a tiny amount of detune, nothing wide. This is not a supersaw. Route it through a lowpass filter with the cutoff parked somewhere between 400 Hz and 1 kHz to start, resonance modest. Give it its own amp envelope, shaped like the sub’s but a touch shorter — 50–70 ms decay works.
Then the move that separates a psy bass from every other kind: a fast filter envelope on the top layer’s cutoff. Short attack, ~40 ms decay, sustain 0, modulation depth enough that each note briefly opens the filter by roughly an octave and slams it shut again. That per-note “chirp” is the sound. Too much depth and you’re making acid; too little and the bass feels dead.
Balancing the two layers
- Sub is the loud one — think of it as the anchor.
- Top layer sits noticeably behind in level. You want to feel it in the full mix more than hear it in solo.
- Everything below ~200 Hz stays mono. Any stereo width goes on the top layer, high-passed above 200 Hz.
Locking to the kick’s tail
This is the step almost nobody explains, and it’s the one that decides whether your track holds together on a rig. A psytrance kick has a sub tail — a short pitch-swept sine that decays over roughly 150–250 ms. If your first bass note fires while that tail is still ringing, the two sines beat against each other, phase cancels in random places, and the whole low end turns to soup.
Solo the kick and bass together. Zoom in between the kick hit and the first bass note. If you still see sub-range energy from the kick when the bass starts, you’ve got a problem. Fix it one of two ways:
- Shorten the kick’s amp release until the tail is gone before the next 16th.
- Nudge the first bass note 5–15 ms off the grid, later, so it starts in silence.
In practice you’ll do a bit of both. Kick and bass together should look like a clean, repeating waveform with a visible gap between each element in the sub range. If the tail of the kick and the head of the bass merge into one fat blob, that’s phase soup and it will destroy the mix at volume.

Sidechain — surgical, not pumping
Psytrance uses sidechain to carve a tiny hole for the kick’s transient, not to create audible pump. If you can hear the ducking, it’s too much and the bass has lost its drive.
A fast compressor sidechained from the kick works fine — Ableton’s Compressor, FabFilter Pro-C 2, or an LFO-shaper like LFO Tool or Kickstart if you want a drawn curve. Aim for 2–4 dB of gain reduction, fastest attack the plugin allows, and a release of roughly 40–70 ms — critically, gain reduction has to be back at 0 dB before the first bass 16th plays. If the sidechain is still pulling down when note one hits, the roll dies.
Check it visually: watch the gain reduction meter with kick and bass soloed. Deep dip on the kick, back to zero before the next 16th, flat between bass notes. If you see the meter chattering on every bass hit, the sidechain is triggering off the bass itself — check your key input.
EQ: decide who owns what
Kick and bass share real estate. You have to assign frequencies and commit to the split.

The overlap zone is 40–80 Hz. If your kick fundamental sits at 55 Hz and your bass root is at 46 Hz, they’ll interfere. Two fixes: retune the kick a semitone or two so its fundamental sits away from the bass root, or take a narrow notch out of the bass at the kick’s exact fundamental (Q ~4, cut a few dB and adjust by ear until the two stop fighting).
High-pass the bass around 28–32 Hz with a steep slope. There’s nothing musically useful below that on a psy bass — it just eats headroom and rattles woofers.
Adding movement without killing the pulse
A one-note rolling bass gets boring by bar 32. But change too much and you lose the hypnotic quality that makes psytrance work at 4 AM. The trick is variations that don’t disturb the pulse — the ear needs to keep feeling that same 16th-note grid underneath.
- Octave drops: every 4 or 8 bars, drop one of the twelve notes down an octave. Just one. It creates a small “trip” without breaking the pattern.
- Root swaps: hold the root for 8 bars, move to the 5th or minor 3rd for 2 bars, come back.
- Strategic mutes: silence the last 16th of a bar every 4 bars. The missing note pulls the ear forward into the next bar.
- Slow filter automation: a very gradual sweep of the top layer’s cutoff across 16 or 32 bars. So slow it’s almost subliminal.
What to avoid: glides, portamento, fast melodic runs, and pitch bends in the low end. Save that for a lead bass part on top later. The rolling bass is rhythm dressed as a note — not a melody.
Distortion belongs on top, never on the sub
Every psy bass has grit, but distortion on a sine sub just generates harmonics that pile into the kick’s zone and blur the low mids. Split the layers and only saturate the top.
Signal chain on the top layer:
- Oscillator out
- High-pass around 100–150 Hz so the saturator has no sub content to harmonically distort
- Saturation — tube, tape, or a mild wavefolder. Drive until you hear character, back off before the note flattens
- Post low-pass or tilt EQ around 3–5 kHz to tame any harsh top the drive introduced
- Sum back with the untouched sub
Same principle in any synth — Sylenth1, Phase Plant, Vital, Bazzism. If the plugin lets you route two oscillators through independent filter and FX chains, use it. If not, run two instances of the synth on two tracks, one for sub and one for top, and process them separately.
Note length: MIDI vs. audible
MIDI note length and the length you actually hear are not the same thing — the amp envelope decides what reaches your ears. But MIDI length still matters, because notes that overlap can cause the envelope to retrigger inconsistently, or not retrigger at all if the synth is in legato mode.
- MIDI note length: roughly half to three-quarters of a 16th. At 145 BPM that’s 50–75 ms.
- Synth voice mode: poly or retrig. Never legato for a rolling bass.
- Envelope release short enough that the note is inaudible before the next MIDI note begins.
Longer MIDI with a shorter envelope gives one feel; shorter MIDI with a slightly longer envelope gives another. Both work. What kills the roll is inconsistency between notes — one at 60 ms, the next at 80 ms. Every note has to be identical.
A/B against a reference
Drop a reference track into your session — a recent Zenon, Nano, Iono or Blacklite release, whatever sits closest to what you’re making. Solo kick and bass in your own project against the solo’d low end of the reference (most modern DAWs have a reference plugin, or you can just drop the WAV on a channel). Match perceived loudness first, then listen for:
- Kick weight and length — is yours longer, boomier, or shorter than the reference?
- Bass-to-kick balance — psy bass sits close to kick level, not tucked underneath
- Whether kick and bass feel like separate events or a single blurred mass
- How much high-mid grit the reference bass carries — you may be too clean or too fried
A spectrum overlay (SPAN, Pro-Q’s reference mode) gives a rough map of where the reference’s energy sits, but don’t try to trace the curve. Every kick and bass pairing is different — the meters guide the ear, not the other way around.

The bottom line
A great rolling bass isn’t a great sound — it’s a great relationship between kick and bass in time and frequency. You can design the fattest bass on earth and it will collapse if the notes overlap the kick tail by 20 ms. A plain sine sub with a filtered saw on top will sound massive on any rig if the timing, envelope shape and EQ split are right.
Program the pattern. Lock the note length. Carve out the kick’s zone. Keep everything mono below 200 Hz. Put character only on the top layer. Do those five things and the low end will carry the track for eight minutes without you thinking about it again — which is exactly the point.
