Most breakdowns fail for the same reason: the emotional arc is flat. Producers stack pads, drop in a piano loop, sprinkle a vocal chop and then wonder why the drop lands like a wet slap. A breakdown isn’t an interlude between drops — it’s a story with a shape: strip the listener bare, give them something to hold onto, then squeeze them into a corner where the only exit is the kick coming back. Every pad, every reverb tail, every noise sweep exists to serve that arc, or it shouldn’t be in the session.
TL;DR
- Harmony first. If the chords don’t move you on a dry piano, no reverb will save them.
- Think in three phases across 32 bars: strip (1–8), rebuild (9–24), lift (25–32).
- Layer three pads by frequency zone — sub-anchor, chord body, air shimmer — not three saws fighting in the mids.
- Write the topline on piano first. Restate the same melody on a supersaw in the drop for instant recognition.
- The last 8 bars are pure engineering: noise up, snare rolls tightening, kick absent. No new melodic ideas.
Start with a progression that has somewhere to fall
Emotional breakdowns are 80% harmony. If your loop is i–VI–III–VII for 32 bars, you’ve already capped the ceiling on how much feeling you can extract, no matter how expensive the pad preset. Sketch the progression on a piano patch and listen dry, at bedroom volume, without a beat under it. If it doesn’t move you naked, it won’t move a festival crowd through six thousand watts either.
In A minor, these are the progressions that keep earning their keep:
- Am – F – C – G (i–VI–III–VII) — the default. Works, but the crowd has heard it a thousand times.
- Am – Dm – G – C (i–iv–VII–III) — the minor iv is the gut-punch chord. That Dm is where the tears live.
- F – G – Em – Am (VI–VII–iii–i) — arrives at the tonic instead of leaving from it, which gives the phrase forward pull.
- Am – F – Dm – E (i–VI–iv–V) — ends on a dominant V, and a V begs to resolve. The last bar of your breakdown should sit on that E.
Two tricks most beginners miss. First, move the bass under a static chord: hold an Am for two bars but walk the bass A–G–F–E underneath. Instant descending-line cliché, and it hits every single time. Second, use suspensions. A Csus2 held for a bar before resolving to C is the sound of a breath being held. Overuse them and it turns saccharine; use one per breakdown and it lands.
Fast test: hum a topline over the loop. If nothing memorable arrives within a few minutes, the progression is the problem, not your imagination. Rewrite before you commit — you’ll save yourself three hours of sound design on a corpse.
Design the 32 bars as three phases, not one long fade-in
Shapeless breakdowns are almost always shapeless because the producer never decided where the phase boundaries were. Give yourself a grid. A standard uplifting breakdown runs 32 bars, split into strip (1–8), rebuild (9–24) and lift (25–32).

You can shrink this to 16 bars for a radio edit or stretch it to 48 for a proper Anjunabeats-length journey, but keep the three-phase logic. Skip the strip and it feels like an interlude. Skip the lift and the drop hits without impact. Blur the boundaries and the whole thing turns to soup.
Three pads, three jobs, three frequency zones
One pad, no matter how lush the preset, cannot fill a breakdown. You need three layers, each occupying a different part of the spectrum and doing a specific job.
- Sub-pad — the anchor. Slow-attack sine or triangle playing the root only (not the chord), often an octave below the main pad. Roughly 60–200 Hz. This is your emotional foundation; keep it mono, keep it clean, and don’t let anything else compete for that band.
- Main chord pad — the body. A gently detuned saw pad (Serum, Sylenth1, Diva) playing full voicings, sitting roughly 200 Hz to 4 kHz. Slow attack (half a second to a second), long release. Dip 200–300 Hz to leave room for the sub-pad.
- Air pad — the shimmer. Bright, glassy, high-passed above around 4 kHz. Slow LFO on the filter or a reverse reverb send for motion. Gate it lightly in eighths for the classic Above & Beyond breathe.
The mistake is stacking three pads that all live in the 300 Hz–2 kHz range. That’s mud. Carve them with EQ before you reach for another reverb.
For depth: chorus and a plate reverb (2–3 s decay) on the main pad; a shimmer or something like Valhalla Supermassive on the air pad, long and unashamedly cheesy. Trance is not the genre for tasteful restraint on the air layer.
Write the topline on piano — the supersaw comes later
If the melody doesn’t work on a piano patch, it won’t work on a plucked saw. The synth will hide the weakness for a bar or two, then expose it. Sit with piano and write a topline that has a real shape: statement, response, climb, resolution.
A formula that reliably works: a 4-bar phrase, then a 4-bar answer that starts the same but ends a step higher. Repeat the whole 8-bar idea; on the third repetition, push the melody up a third or a fourth for the climactic statement. Simple, and it’s the skeleton under half the Anjunabeats catalogue.
Some rules that tend to hold:
- Keep phrases singable. If you can’t sing it in one breath, it’s too dense — the drop restatement will feel cluttered.
- Land on the root or fifth for stability; land on the third or seventh to keep tension alive into the next phrase.
- Use silence. Half a bar of rest between phrases makes the next note hit harder than any reverb tail will.
- Don’t fear long notes. Two bars of a sustained fifth over a moving progression is emotionally louder than sixteen semiquavers.
Then translate. First statement on a soft pluck (short attack, medium decay, no release). Second statement doubled with a bell or music box an octave up. In the drop, restate the exact same melody on a full supersaw stack. Familiarity plus release is the trick — the listener already knows the tune, so the drop feels like arrival, not surprise.
The pluck: envelope shape is everything
The plucked lead isn’t the flashy sound, but it’s the one carrying the melody through the rebuild. Two detuned saws in Serum or Sylenth, and an envelope that behaves like a plucked string.
Starting point, tune by ear:
- Amp envelope: attack 0 ms, decay 300–400 ms, sustain around 15–25%, release around 200 ms.
- Filter envelope (routed to lowpass cutoff): attack 0, decay ~250 ms, sustain 0, release short. Base cutoff sitting relatively low, envelope amount pushing the cutoff wide open on note-on. Bright on the transient, quickly darkening — that’s the pluck.
Then the delay, which is where the trance identity lives: dotted-eighth ping-pong (3/16), feedback around 30–40%, mix around 25%. High-pass the delay return above roughly 300 Hz so the repeats don’t muddy the low-mids. Follow it with a plate or hall reverb, decay in the 3–4 second range, mix modest, also high-passed. This is the sound Above & Beyond built a career on and it still works because the envelope math is right.
Layer the pluck with a soft bell — FM, or one of Serum’s bell wavetables — pitched an octave up and panned slightly opposite. The bell fills the transient hole and adds sparkle without stealing focus from the melody.

A vocal — even a faked one — focuses the emotion
Nothing lands like a human voice. You do not need a session singer and a $2,000 topline for the breakdown to work. A single sustained “ahh” pitched to your chord progression can carry sixteen bars on its own.
In order of effort and payoff:
- Sustained vowel pad. Sample or license a female “ahh” or “ooh”, loop it, treat it like a pad, and pitch it to the progression. Soundiron Voices of Rapture, Heavyocity Vocalise, or a well-cleared acapella all work.
- Chopped one-word hook. Take a phrase like “hold on” or “we are” and place it at the top of each 8-bar phrase. Repetition builds familiarity faster than novelty ever will.
- Full topline. A verse leading into the drop. Biggest commitment, biggest emotional payoff, biggest chance of a signable record.
Treatment matters as much as the source. De-ess, cut mud around 250 Hz, add a shelf of air around 10–12 kHz, then send heavily to a long reverb (4 s+) and a quarter-note delay. Duck both the reverb and delay sends from the dry vocal with a fast sidechain so consonants stay intelligible and the tail only blooms in the gaps. Pitch the second statement up an octave, or harmonise a third and fifth above with Melodyne or Waves Harmony. Instant lift.
The last 8 bars are engineering, not composition
Bars 25–32 aren’t a place to write music. You’re stacking tension mechanics, and each element has a specific job.
- Tonal riser: a sustained note (root or fifth) that slowly pitches up, or a sample-based riser that opens its filter across the full 8 bars. Automate the volume upward as the bars progress.
- Noise sweep: a separate white/pink noise layer with a bandpass sweeping upward across the last 4 bars, roughly from the low mids into the top octave. A slow LFO on the filter adds motion so it doesn’t feel like a straight ramp.
- Snare roll: half notes at bar 25, quarters at 27, eighths at 29, sixteenths at 31, landing on a fat open snare or crash on the downbeat of the drop. Ramp the volume with the density so the ear feels acceleration, not just repetition.
- Reverse cymbal: peaking on the downbeat of the drop, starting roughly 4 bars out. The single most reliable “arrival” cue in the genre.
- Sub-drop: a sine sweeping from around 150 Hz down to sub-audible across the last 2 bars, silent on the drop itself. Gives the falling sensation under everything else rising.
Non-negotiable: the kick stays out. The moment an audible kick lands before the drop, you’ve spent the release. A silent ghost-kick MIDI track for sidechain purposes is fine — an audible kick is a self-inflicted wound.
Automate motion, not just level
The rebuild phase dies without constant subtle movement. Level automation alone gives you a crescendo, not a build. Three things worth automating across bars 9–24:
- Lowpass on the main pad: start partially closed (somewhere around 800 Hz–1 kHz, tuned by ear against the mix), open fully by bar 24. Slow, linear, boring — that’s the point. The ear tracks it subconsciously.
- Reverb mix on the pluck: start wet and distant (around 40% wet), pull back toward 15% by bar 24. The melody walks from the back of the room to the front, which is exactly the psychological arc you want.
- Delay throws: on the last note of every 4-bar phrase, automate a moment of increased send to a long delay. Natural echoes-into-space, and they mark phrase boundaries without you writing any extra notes.
One more move worth the effort: highpass the entire breakdown bus starting around 200 Hz in bars 1–8, then automate the highpass down to 20 Hz by bar 16. The low end appears to “return” even though the sub-pad has been there the whole time. Your ear fills the gap and reads it as growing weight.
Sidechain everything, even with no kick in the room
No kick, but the pump is what keeps trance breathing. Program a silent four-to-the-floor MIDI track and use it as the sidechain key for the pads, plucks and vocal reverb sends. Without it, the breakdown feels static even with great chords. With it, there’s an implied pulse that primes the listener for the real kick to return.

Kickstart, LFOTool, or any compressor with an external sidechain input all work. LFOTool is the cleanest because you draw the exact ducking shape — I usually pull the curve down sharply on the downbeat and let it recover with a soft exponential rather than a linear ramp. The bottom line
An emotional breakdown isn’t a genre trick or a preset problem. It’s storytelling with sound: strip the listener bare, rebuild them with harmony and melody they can hold onto, then squeeze them into a corner where the only possible release is the kick returning. Everything from the iv chord to the reverse cymbal is in service of that arc.
Get harmony right first. If the chords don’t move you played dry on a piano at low volume, no amount of pads, plucks, reverse cymbals or vocal chops will rescue them later. Then structure the 32 bars deliberately, layer your pads by frequency zone, and treat the final 8 bars as engineered tension rather than composition.
The producers whose breakdowns you still remember years after first hearing them — Above & Beyond, Andrew Bayer, Ilan Bluestone — aren’t hiding a secret plugin chain. They’re disciplined about the arc. Steal the structure, write your own melody, and you’re already halfway there.
